Dear Trail Supporter,
As 2017 comes to a close, I am both gratified by the tremendous support the Huron Waterloo Pathways Initiative (HWPI) has received this past year, and excited at the prospect of getting construction underway on multiple segments of the Border-to-Border Trail system (B2B) over the next 3-4 months.
Construction will begin shortly on 2.6 miles of trail north of Chelsea and on an additional 1.2 miles along the Huron River working from Dexter towards Ann Arbor, with more building to come. This wave of construction is being fueled by the $2.5M HWPI has raised since its founding three years ago, combined with over $5.2M in state grants and $2.8M in funding the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission (WCPARC).
While the 2018 construction blitz is going to be amazing, there is much work to be done if we are to help WCPARC complete the entire B2B by 2021. Easements have been secured, WCPARC has dedicated substantial resources, and The State of Michigan has demonstrated its support of the project. The essential final ingredient that will ensure rapid completion of our trail system continues to be private matching funds.
This is where we need your help. The B2B cannot be built in the next five years without private sector support. Please help us create a legacy of health and wellness in our communities by building safe recreational trails. Let’s seize the opportunity to improve the quality of life of our region, connect our cities and towns, and expand commuting alternatives!
Please spend a few minutes to read our enclosed HWPI 2017 Year-End Report, to see what we have accomplished this year, the impact of the Karen’s Trail Campaign and the construction plans for 2018. I would also encourage you to support the Trail through a year-end gift. Your contribution now will determine how quickly we can complete the B2B. A gift from you will help make our collective vision of the B2B a reality. I hope to see you on the Trail!
Best,
Jeff Hardcastle, Board Chair
