‘Point of Reflection’: A New Gateway Landmark on the B2B Trail
We’re excited to share the story behind a meaningful new addition to the B2B Trail: the Point of Reflection sculpture at Broadway Park West. Designed by local artist Mike Griffin, this 12-foot-tall installation is made possible through donations from seven longtime Ann Arbor “Townies” who care deeply about the trail and the river it follows – Jamie Buhr, John Carver, Paul Dimond, Steve Dobson, Howdy Holmes, Ray Pittman, and Tim Wadhams
Located in the northwest corner of the park, the sculpture sits at a key crossroads—where the B2B Trail meets the Allen Creek Pedestrian Tunnel and the new Broadway Park West trails and bridge. This placement is intentional. It serves as a welcoming point for those entering Ann Arbor from the north, and a moment of pause for those heading out toward the park’s nature areas, local institutions, and the many recreational opportunities along the river.
Point of Reflection also serves as a symbol of Broadway Park West’s evolution from a once blighted site to a symbol of community and connection. Today, the Huron River corridor has been transformed into a vibrant natural and recreational resource, supporting activities like canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing, while also allowing access to an expanding network of riverside trails.
The Point of Reflection sculpture is meant to capture that transformation. It invites trail users and park visitors to stop, reflect on the river’s rich history, and consider their role in its future. It’s a reminder of how environmental stewardship can restore and sustain something truly valuable.
In time, visitors will also be able to explore the history of this gateway site inside the future Tim & Laurie Wadhams Pavilion, where interactive exhibits will share the story of the area and its connection to the broader community. Together, the pavilion and sculpture will create a layered experience that blends art, history, and place.

Many of the donors who made this piece possible are also strong supporters of the Huron Waterloo Pathways Initiative, the nonprofit organization helping to advance the vision of an expanded B2B Trail linking parks, riverfront spaces, and communities along the Huron River.
As you pass through Broadway Park West, we hope you’ll take a moment at the Point of Reflection. Look out over the river, consider how far it has come, and think about how we can all help protect and enhance this shared natural resource for generations.
